Biography Donelson R. Forsyth G. Stanley Hall - Harry Kirke Wolfe Lecturer American Psychological Association (2008) Forsyth completed his undergraduate work at Florida State University in 1974, majoring in sociology and psychology with a minor in education. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Florida in 1978. He has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Kansas, and University of Richmond. He currently holds the Colonel Leo K. and Gaylee Thorsness Chair in Ethical Leadership in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. Forsyth's books include An Introduction to Group Dynamics (1983), Social Psychology (1987), Psychotherapy and Behavior Change (1988, with H. N. Higgenbotham & S. G. West), Group Dynamics (1990, 2nd ed.), Our Social World (1995), Group Dynamics (1999, 3rd ed.), A Professor's Guide to Teaching (2002), and Group Dynamics (2006, 4th ed). He also edited, with C. R. Snyder, the Handbook of Social and Clinical Psychology: The Health Perspective (1991) and The Social Psychology of Leadership with Crystal Hoyt and George Goethals (2008). A social psychologist, Forsyth studies groups, leadership, ethical thought, and moral judgment. He was recognized as the Outstanding Group Psychologist by the American Psychological Association in 1996 and received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Virginia Social Science Association in 2001. His has authored over 100 books, chapters, and articles on groups and related topics, and his work has appeared in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, American Psychologist, and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. In 1996 he founded the journal Group Dynamics and serves, in 2008, as the president of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy, a division of the American Psychological Association. Forsyth received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Department of Psychology in 1982 and the Lecturer Award from the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1985. In 1992 he received the Distinguished Teaching Award at VCU and in 2000 the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology. Other awards include recognition as a Central Virginia Faculty Consortium Professor from 1992 to 1994, Psi Chi Distinguished Lecturer in 1992, and Faculty Technology Mentor in 1998 and 1999. In 2002 he received the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award. |
